The purpose of learning anything is retaining what you learn. My Study Mantra will use the number line to teach addition. The number line is a reliable and effective way to teach addition. When a student uses number line, he sees how addition works.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
Before you begin your child's addition lesson, you will need the following supplies:
(1) single digit addition cards,
(2) number line from 0 to 18,
(3) coin or small toy, and
(4) timer or stop watch. You can buy these items at your local Dollar Tree Store.
When your child completes the quick retention test, write down his time where he can see it. Every time, your child takes the quick retention test encourage him to improve on his previous time.
If your child completes the initial quick retention lesson with long hesitations, then repeat the number line lesson again. If there are very little or no hesitation, then you should congratulate your child for a job well done.
Keep practicing using a different set of addition cards and the number line with or without the coin (or toy). After each number line lesson, then do the quick retention test. Remember learning only works when it is retain.

ADDITION LESSON
Follow these easy directions. Place the number line on the table. Give your child a sheet of paper and pencil to copy the math sentences. Take a card from the top of the deck.
Let's suppose the top card is 2+ 3.
(1) Ask your child to place his coin (or small toy) above the two on the number line.
(2) Tell him to move the coin (or small toy) three places to the right.
(3) Say out loud, “So 2 + 3 = what number?”
(4) Wait for a response (give him at least 15 seconds) to say the answer.
(5) Tell him write the math sentence “2 + 3 = 5” on his paper.
Repeat steps 1-5 at least nine or more times. Ask him to look over the math sentences he wrote down. Set aside the ten or more addition cards and your child's math paper.

QUICK RETENTION TEST
My Study Mantra call this the quick retention test because the child is tested immediately after the lesson.
For the quick retention test, you will need the timer or stop watch, number line and same ten or more addition cards face down. The first time your child completes the retention lesson you are finding his initial time.
(1) Turn the timer or stop watch on.
(2) Place the number line in front of him.
(3) Tell him he will only use his eyes to find the answer on the number line. Your child will do the following with out your help
(4) Turn over one card
(5) Read the card out loud
(6) Answer the math sentence
(7) Repeat steps 4-6.
